Our Take

Our Take

The BMW X5 xDrive45e is the plug-in hybrid version of the standard BMW X5, and offers most of the familiar comforts that have made its gasoline cousin such a popular choice in the luxury SUV market (we say most, because there are a couple of minor concessions here - the 7 seat option isn't available on the plug-in version, and the rear cargo floor is a little higher). With this X5, you get 30 miles of EV range before switching to a hybrid mode that operates at about 20 mpg. As PHEVs go, that's pretty average - but you don't buy this car because you want the best PHEV, you buy it because you want a BMW with PHEV capabilities. At that, it has no rivals.

What we love

  • Familiar formula that works well
  • Functional, premium interior
  • Clean, understated design

What we don't

  • No 7 seat option
  • Range lags cheaper PHEVs
  • Charge time is slower than rivals

EV Range
Why EV Range Is Important

An EV's advertised range is just an estimate. Your mileage may vary, literally! It's important to understand the factors that can affect EV range, so you choose a car that has enough for your lifestyle and habits. Not choosing enough range for your unique needs can prove to be a frustrating and expensive mistake. If you're not sure how range works or how much you need, visit our section on identifying your EV needs.

Peak Charge Rate
Why Charge Rate Is Important

Would you rather charge for 20 minutes, or an hour? That's essentially what charge rate comes down to, how much time you'll spend at the plug. Different EVs are capable of charging at different speeds, so it's important to understand what your car's "Peak" or "Max" Charge Rate is. Charge rate is measured in Kilowatts (kW) and in 2023, the average peak charge rate is about 150kW. The fastest EVs charge at 250kW and above. Plug-In Hybrids will charge much slower. What does this mean for actual charge times? Well there's a little more to it...

What is MPGe?

MPGe or Miles Per Gallon Equivalent, is a way to compare the relative efficiency of cars using different types of energy. MPGe says there is 33.7 kWh of energy in a single gallon of gas, so we'll use that equivelency to compare to cars using kWh of energy from gas, batteries, or both.

MPG in hybrid mode
If you see a number for "MPG in hybrid mode" on this vehicle page, that's the average gas mileage one can expect AFTER this vehicle's hybrid battery has been depleted. When the battery is used, a plug-in hybrid will operate more like a "full hybrid". For more on the different types of hybrids, check out this article.

Charge times

Charge times are estimated, and based on charging to 80% capacity. Real-world times may vary significantly based on available amperage and environmental conditions.
